Lavreotiki art project was a research oriented project that invited 12 contemporary artists to explore the cultural heritage (tangible, intangible and natural) of Lavreotiki over two consecutive years (2022-2023). Research and production were of equal importance and culminated to the group exhibition “The Land of Lavreotiki, the echo of a distant time”.

Participant artists: Maria Efstathiou, Alexis Fidetzis, Eva Isliefs, Georgia Kotretsos, Panayiotis Lamprou, Maria Nikiforaki, Campus Novel, George Palamaris, Katerina Papazissi, Georges Salameh, Vasiliki Sifostratoudaki, Augustus Veinoglou.
Acknowledging that Lavreotiki’s cultural heritage remains somewhat overlooked, the project was conceived as a body wandering through the area, seeking to uncover and engage with the cultural landscape of Lavreotiki. The region boasts a rich mineral substratum, and mining was a central activity even before antiquity. In 500 BC, silver extraction funded the city-state of Athens, while in the 19th century, Lavrion in Lavreotiki became the first industrial city of modern Greece. The exploitation of these mineral resources led to the development of social arrangements and industries. Although monuments and remnants are scarce in the region, Lavreotiki is unique for its mineralogical, geological, archaeological, and metallurgical sites. However, it is more commonly associated with the Lavrion port and the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion.
Research was realized in 2022 and production in 2023 and both cast an attempt to encounter its lifeworld. For the period of research, the Lavreotiki art project, in collaboration with local and from other areas institutions, organised daily field-trips in Lavreotiki. The research was featured in an online publication that THE ΤΕΛΟΣ SOCIETY organisation created (2022).
The group exhibition was hosted in the industrial estate of the Technological Cultural Park in Lavrio, a site designated as a protected monument of industrial architecture. The park is housed within the former estate of the French Mining Company. The artworks comprised of sculptures, installations, performances, video, paintings and photographs recreating what makes the place and embrace the fragility of its lifeworld.
